Liddell Power Station, a relic of industrialisation with decades of coal-fired energy production, embodies our historical dependence on coal. Viewing it through this lens of industrial heritage, my artworks become speculative machines of the future, contributing to the conversation about energy dynamics in the Hunter during this pivotal transition.

My artworks are part of the narrative of technological evolution, offering glimpses into new possibilities while serving as cultural and material time capsules. Safely encapsulating coal and fly-ash into low CO2 concrete signals a shift to responsible alternatives, reflecting a broader architectural and cultural transition from traditional to modern energy production—a future that learns from its past.

This transformation extends beyond material integration, embodying principles of innovation and social responsibility. Influenced by the power station’s iconic 168-metre concrete chimneys and Brutalist architecture, the machines honour the power station’s legacy while reminding us of the need to address the social and environmental impacts of fossil fuel dependency.

These speculative machines are evidence of our capacity to innovate in the face of climate challenges. They aim to inspire curiosity and invite viewers to envision a future where creativity and responsibility converge to shape our built environment and energy systems positively.
