When exploring the Liddell site, I was instantly struck by the glorious textures and surface patterns that exist throughout the plant, which set my mind racing with the many possibilities for creating works linking back to this.
Texture is a key element in art that can affect mood and evoke strong psychological associations. I decided to ‘salvage’ and remember the site through its texture and tactile nature. My overall concept was to collect, imprint and recreate a variety of textures from this soon to be demolished and dismantled plant, which would then be gone forever.
After capturing the fascinating textures, which show over fifty years of wear and tear, history, and human interaction, I then transformed them into something new and vibrant. This process reflects the transformation of the site, along with the global shift towards sustainable energy.
After listening to the stories of staff on our visits to the plant, as it was about to be decommissioned, I really felt for the workers who have put their heart, soul and in many cases their entire working lives into Liddell. Through these textures, I hope to create a sense of familiarity and connection, bridging the past and the present in a meaningful way.
